Scattering or Laying to Rest of Ashes
Today in England and Wales, over 75% of all funerals are cremations: and in around 70% of those cremations the ashes are taken home by loved ones. Usually the ashes are then scattered or laid to rest at a place which has some meaning to the deceased or to the loved ones, or in accordance with faith or cultural beliefs.Close to Peterborough, the River Nene offers many beautiful, unique and picturesque spots. Where better as a final resting place and somewhere to return to time and time again to enjoy fond memories?
Your choices for your loved one depend on whether you wish to scatter the ashes or lay them to rest at a specific location. In either case, all arrangements, including those on the boat on the day, will be conducted personally by our company owner Bob Currell. You can be assured of the appropriate care, dignity and respect: and we can help with as much or as little of the arrangements as you require.
Whether you want a jolly, happy celebration or a more reserved ceremony on the day, we will look after you and your loved one at every stage. You can say a few words at the scattering or laying to rest, and bring some favourite music to play as well. Afterwards, if you wish, you can continue for a cruise and bring some light refreshments or perhaps use one of the cafes in Ferry Meadows.
Scattering Ashes
The scattering of ashes can be done directly from the container provided by your Funeral Director but must be done very carefully even in the lightest of wind and you will need to be guided by our advice on the day. Some particles will disperse on the wind, whilst others will sink to the bottom of the river.
Laying to Rest of Ashes
Laying to rest the ashes means placing them in a special container, which we can help you obtain and prepare if you wish. This is then laid on top of the water. and, depending on your choice, will either sink to the bottom immediately or float for a few minutes before gracefully disappearing beneath the surface. The container will then disintegrate over a short period of time.
Other Tributes
Care must be taken to place into the water, only tributes or other items that will break down biologically. A few flower petals is fine but please ask for advice on other items.
Locations
There are many places on the River Nene that are ideal for scattering ashes or for laying them to rest. We can recommend places to you - very secluded or very accessible - according to your wishes, or you can even choose somewhere as we cruise along.
